Outdoor Landscape Lighting

If you are considering landscaping your lawn, then one of the things that you’ll want to look at is outdoor landscape lighting. Outdoor landscape lighting can make a landscaping job even more beautiful by highlighting certain areas or pathways, as well as making it easier to navigate the yard at night. Of course you can also double outdoor landscape lighting as security lighting, incorporating lights in the doorways and window areas, as well as installing motion detector lights at certain places. You’ll want to consider carefully however, because things like voltage, pets and other factors can affect your outdoor landscape lighting.

The first thing you’ll want to consider with your landscape lighting is placement. Do you want to highlight a certain landscaped garden section, or trimmed hedges, or do you want to illuminate sidewalks and paths leading up to the entrances of your home. Outdoor landscape lights comes in a variety of types, including those that stick in the ground and run on batteries, those that run off of electrical and even solar powered outdoor landscape lighting. Decide where you are going to put your lights first and then you can determine what sort of power you’ll need to use to run them.

Solar lights are a popular choice, but if you live in an area that doesn’t get much sunshine at certain times of the year then you may not want the unreliability of strictly solar powered outdoor landscape lighting. However, you can also get a battery backup that kicks in when there isn’t enough solar energy stored to power the lights. This is a handy thing, because it means that your lighting is reliable but also that you won’t have to change batteries very often, and in fact maybe only a few times in your lifetime. Also, it’s eco-friendly.

If you are worried about security then you definitely want to invest in reliable lighting, that has enough wattage to illuminate the areas you are trying to watch over. Put your lights near the doorways and windows. You can use motion sensor outdoor landscape lighting if you want, but be aware that pets and other small animals such as squirrels, racoons or neighborhood or your own pets may set off your lights at all hours of the night, which means that you will become used to them coming on and they won’t function as well as a security feature. They do make motion sensor lighting that only goes off if it detects someone of human size but they are more expensive.

You can find great deals on landscaping lighting online, and a huge selection on several websites. You can generally find a good range in department stores as well, but you may not get the selection or features that you want.   If there is a landscaping specialty store in your area then you may be able to find what you want there, and if they don’t have what you need then they can almost always order it.
